Canterbury Terrace

A significant piece of Melbourne’s architectural heritage, this 3 storey terrace house was imagined as a series of precise inserts to existing building fabric. The facade of the home, and internal planning remain largely unchanged from its heritage bones – but critical and careful removal of internal walls bring much needed light and connection. A re-examination of the daily ritual resulted in a new concrete portal marking the entry sequence to the home, bringing the heritage bluestone walls back into the daily experience of the house.

The landscaped courtyard connects to the basement floor, where it was previously a cold and inhabitable storage area, now a cosy family entertainment lounge. A light touch approach to the heritage building fabric meant joinery, furniture and lighting brought texture and materiality to create an engaging interior. Minimalist surfaces balances with the new interiors compliment the home’s intricate heritage detail, spacious volume and client’s art collection.
