Stawell House

Stawell House focused on restoration rather than redesign. The home is perched atop a steep cliff face, surrounded by panoramic views of Yarra bend Park. Originally designed in the 1970’s by Daryl Jackson and Evan Walker, the refurbishment set out to preserve the modernist plan but elevate the home’s interaction with the view and outdoors.

A new balcony was designed with a stepped profile, to mimic the profile of the original home. The resulting zigzag not only creates a series of outdoor rooms, but also captures north and west views. As an older building, the glazing, shading, and heating required an overhaul to create a comfortable home exposed to the elements. Downstairs a new ensuite and guest room were designed to tuck beneath the balcony. The spaces are so private, an outdoor bath was possible, creating the perfect place to unwind after a long day.
