After years of under appreciation the heritage building affectionately known as, The Stables, had become a storage facility for the Hospital. The project brief required this building to be transformed into executive offices for the staff at the Alfred Hospital. After researching the history of the building we proposed an industrial aesthetic, with a subdued material pallet. As a result, the existing features and details of the heritage building became the show piece. Weaving steel and glass elements through the floor plate allowed separation of working zones while maintaining transparency between working spaces. Structural incisions created vertical circulation and entry to each floor. Paint was stripped off to reveal the existing brick and lime washed blue stone wall.

As layers of paint were revealed, historical swatches of colour became visible. These colours then informed decisions about the interior material palette. The refurbishment of Alfred Stables, brought back the building’s former glory and became the new home for 150 administrative staff. The result was a new ecosystem for the Alfred personnel, creating new possibilities around work and interaction with colleagues.
